Antananarivo’s stonemasons
The Bemasoandro career, just outside of Antananarivo, capital of Madagascar. In this big hole of granite, the sound of the chisel against the rock is uninterrupted. Here the stonemasons are mostly women. Before working in the quarry, they lived with their families on the street, in the dump, abandoned by their husbands or orphan. Today, they work to live, shelter and educate their children. Where the Malagasy State has failed to help them, it’s an association, Akamasoa, who takes over for the most needy out of poverty by offering them a job. La carrière Besamasoandro, à la sortie d’Antananarivo, capitale de Madagascar. Dans ce grand trou de granit, le bruit des burin contre la roche est ininterrompu. Ici, les tailleurs de pierre sont principalement des femmes. Avant de travailler dans la carrière, elles vivaient avec leur famille dans la rue, la décharge, elles étaient abandonnées par leur mari ou encore orphelines. Aujourd’hui, elles travaillent pour vivre, avoir un toit et scolariser leurs enfants. Là où l’Etat malgache n’a pas su leur venir en aide, c’est une association, Akamasoa, qui prend le relais pour sortir les plus miséreux de la pauvreté en leur offrant un travail.
